Hemithyroidectomy is what i had on 18th April 2018

For those of you wondering what this is, a month earlier I had an fNA needle done on a lump in my right thyroid, results were hurtle cell cat 4 suspicious. So a surgeon took my right thyroid on the 18th April 2018.

Now I have top health private cover so one would think I was in good hands.

Trouble is from the moment I woke up, I knew something didn’t feel right. Good news though, my results were benign.

So month by month, I will let you know how I have been feeling, and everything I found out along the way of still trying to recover.

Did you know everyone has a vagus nerve, very important and I will input some information on that in here so you understand more.

When Thyroid surgery is being done, the surgeon has to be very careful of the branches of the vagus nerve as it controls so many parts of your body.

The importance of your vagus nerve

The vagus nerve is one of the cranial nerves that connectthe brain to the body. The vagus nerve has two bunches of sensory nerve cell bodies, and it connects the brainstem tothe body. It allows the brain to monitor and receive information about several of the body’s different functions.

The vagus controls the muscles involved in the esophageal stage of the swallow as well as those that control respiration. (This is the only cranial nerve that influences structures inferior to the neck.) The vagus carries sensory information from the velum and posterior and inferior portions of the pharynx.

What happens in Vagus, stays in Vagus

Relief that the results were benign

But, as soon as I woke from surgery I felt so unwell and just didn’t feel right. At the time I put it down to having just had surgery.

Looking back, clearly something was wrong and that something went wrong during surgery. I was kept in hospital an extra day, then sent home and reassured that it just takes time to recover.
